Limiting Snacks

Snacking frequently throughout the day can increase the risk of developing tooth decay. Plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, constantly forms on teeth. When you eat foods or drink beverages that contain sugars or starches, the bacteria in plaque produce harmful acids that attach your tooth enamel. These acids can linger in your mouth for up to 20 minutes after you eat. Repeated or prolonged exposure to these acids can break down the enamel and tooth decay can develop.

Sipping soda and chomping on chips throughout the day can eat away at your pearly whites. To keep your smile healthy, limit snacks and eat nutritious, well-balanced meals. If you need a snack, choose nutritious foods for good general and oral health!

Mouth Piercing

Mouth jewelery makes a statement, but your mouth may have a few things to say about it too. Pain and swelling of the pierced area is common, as are injuries to the gums. Piercings may become infected easily and cause bad breath. Teeth can chip or crack from contact with mouth jewelry, especialy in those who have a tendency to play with their piercing. If you have a pierced tongue consider replacing the jewelry with plastic to decrease broken teeth. With all mouth piercings rinse with an antibacterial, alcohol-free mouth rinse 30-60 seconds after each meal and before bed.
